Kenneth A. Parr's Teaching Portfolio

INTASC Principle (10)

The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well-being.

Knowledge:
My awards and honors here at Honors and Achievements are evidence of my participation in extra curricular activities because all these honors are for extra curricular activities.  My leadership award is for leading a team of students to a state championship in their Media Fair category.  My regional science fair awards were because of students showing their appreciation with votes for sponsoring science fair projects outside of my classroom.  My DuPont challenge award was for encouraging students to submit science related essays in a science essay contest.  The essay work had to be done afterschool since the participants were not my current students.  My letter of appreciation from the Wirt athletics director related to my afterschool coaching career.

Disposition:
The letter below shows evidence that I am able to have respectful and productive communications with parents.  This letter also shares some of my educational philosophy in addition to asking parents for permission to use their child's images on electronic media and explaining why I feel the parents should give such permission.

Dear Parent,

Welcome to the {science} class taught by Mr. K Parr.  Part of my educational philosophy is all students regardless of their cultural background should have access to technology, particularly electronic media.  Technology is here to stay.  Our textbooks, student portfolios and whenever possible, our lab assignments are on computer.  We will be using technology constantly in our science class to keep pace (or exceed) the rest of society.

Keeping pace with society also means your child’s image may appear on computer from time to time (for educational purposes only).  The kids seem to love seeing themselves this way.  Please allow your child’s image to appear on electronic media.  Thank you.

Performance:
In addition to my work beyond regular school hours resulting in Honors and Achievements, I was able to expand my students' involvement in the schoolwide/citywide recycling program by making a field lab for our classroom.  A Power-Point presentation on my Recycling Lab follows.
